A short guide to Shibuya

A busy, youth-oriented shopping district, Shibuya is equally famous for the NHK studios, Olympic gymnasium, and “Hachiko”—the statue of a faithful dog. On weekends, its Harajuku area is abuzz with the meeting and mingling of Tokyo’s most fashionable teens. Neighboring Ebisu, a short subway ride from here, offers a pleasant, quiet alternative to Shibuya.

If you're looking for a central place in a trendy part of Tokyo it cannot better than this. Located literally on top of Shibuya station it is one of the most convenient train hubs in the city. The hotel room was very spacious and clean. The concierge service was top notch, from detail directions to the Tsukiji market to late night assistance to a hospital visit (long story)they helped without any hesitation. I was a bit aged and appliances are somewhat old (tube television) but fully operational. Yes, it is loud and crazy right when you step a foot outside of the hotel, but inside is a oasis of tranquility. Did I mention the view? Stunning!!!

Hotel on par with my European expectations. Room felt very old-school, but totally OK since I wasn't there. Location is really fun to be in the center of teen pop culture. I'd choose some place in Roppongi if I'd go back since there's where the party is for foreigners.

The Shibuya Excel Tokyu is one of the few hotels in Tokyo that offers triple rooms. Each of the three beds was just a little smaller than an American double bed--very spacious for one person, and could probably accommodate 2 kids. The room itself was very large by Japanese standards. The room had a minibar/refrigerator, a small table, a large desk area and 4 chairs. The rooms are very well sound-proofed, too. The location is perfect, and those who say it's difficult to find must have been severely jet-lagged when they arrived. If you know you're looking for the ground floor of the Mark Center building, it's impossible to miss. This is a first-class hotel, and the staff was consistently helpful.

the shibuya excel turned out to far exceed our imagination. saying it was near a major train station and some shops was enough to select it, given this was a first trip to japan and we were concernad about hauling suitcases from the airport and then later on to kyoto. the hotel has a huge indoor passage not only to shibuya station (one of the largest in tokyo) but also to a mall of quality shops, and another hall of terrific restaurants and coffee shops. below them all is the "food show," a permanent world of exquisite food vendors, the kind japan is famous for that are usually located under the department stores. the rooms are simple, spotless, with comfy beds and those heated-bottom-washing toilets, cable inc several channels in english, vending machines near elevators, and very formal, helpful english speaking staff. the on-site restuarant is high-end with a perpetual line becuase the food and the view are great. even the flower arrangements in the lobby, perfect and always changing, are a delight. this was listed as 3.5 stars but based on my extensive world travels this is certainly a solid 4-star experience.

Was very pleased with the overall room condition, automatic assignment to secured floors, nice concierge services, and access to a variety of restaurants just a floor or two from the lobby, and an immediate access to various trains. I recommend this hotel for travelers with family

1) Convenience: This hotel is pretty much connected to the JR station which means if the weather is bad, you don't have to even go outside. 2) Location: Its located right next to the famous Shibuya Crossing so if you like busy areas, bright lights, lots of people, this is the hotel to stay at. 3) Logistics: Limo Bus directly to and from NRT to this hotel. Extremely convenient because it's pretty bad having to carry luggage to different stops via subway and you definitely do not want to take a cab. 4) Room Space: Quite a bit of room space to put your stuff down.

Reviewed by Alan of Medford on Jun 2, 2009

The hotel is sits above and is connected directly to the Shibuya subway station, with multiple subway lines flowing from it, including the JR rail line. So, as a transportation hub, the spot is terrific. However, Shibuya is a frenetic and youthful setting. The surrounding area -- with multiple department stores, restaurants, bars, pachinko parlors, and adult entertainment establishments -- attracts flocks of trend-setting teens and 20ish patrons who swarm the streets and plaza nearby. Indeed, despite a staid hotel setting, many of the other foreign guests in the hotel itself seemed rather more like the hordes of casually-dressed youth in the streets below than like patrons of a 4-star hotel. Leaving aside the location, the hotel itself is clean and orderly, the standard double room in which I found myself rather small and bland, but well-appointed with amenities that made for an effortless stay. The restaurants on the 25th (top) floor are costly, and I found the breakfast buffet (there was no a la carte options) very over-priced and far less impressive than comparable offerings in hotels I have patronized in Asia. That said, there is a mall below the hotel that features a ubiquitous coffee-chain outlet and other possibilities nearby. In sum, as a mid-aged professional I appreciated the convenience of the hotel and its location. Reserving on-line I feel I got appropriate value for my money, but beyond that, I cannot say I enjoyed the stay.

I previously stayed at the highly-rated Park Hotel Tokyo, which was a fantastic hotel, but decided to try something different this time. The Shibuya Excel Hotel is in a terrific location and I had a small "semi double" room on the 16th floor, facing the famous Shibuya Crossing. The in-room amenities may not be as nice as the Park Hotel Tokyo, but it was very comfortable, functional and clean. Whether you are looking for local or western food, you'll find it conveniently here, and the proximity of the bustling Shibuya train station cannot be beat. Shinjuku is only 3 stops away on the Yamanote line, but you'll surely find plenty to remain entertained in Shibuya.

This hotel is the perfect place for your visit to Tokyo. The location is superb - inside the Shibuya station and easy walking distance to shopping, restaurants, Yoyogi Park and other sites. Shibuya is one of the best neighborhoods of Tokyo with plenty to see and do for all ages. Plus, you can walk downstairs to hop on a train to other parts of the city when needed. The staff at the hotel took care of us and were able to answer any questions (multiple fluent English speakers at the front desk, if needed). The rooms were very clean and the beds were awesome - very firm and best night's sleep in a while. On upper floors, you have fantastic views of the city. Great location over train station but a little dated feeling inside. Service was excellent. Staff were gracious and extremely nice. Room was OK....would have been nice to have a microwave or a frigde in this price range hotel though. Not just one tiny shelf in the mini bar. I'm not sure if comparable hotels offer that either though. The hallways by our room were very hot in July. They must have been conserving on air in those areas. I have stayed at this hotel twice. I will likely try another hotel next time. Nothing really wrong with this one....but nothing outstanding either. The best thing going for it is the fabulous loaction over the train station in my opinion.

We stayed at the Shibuya Excel Hotel in March 2008 and loved the location. You are right at the train station and the 4th floor of the building houses several restaurants and mini-marts, which is very convenient. The rooms were quite nice and a decent size, but probably a little smaller than what you'd find at an American hotel chain. The rooms have shades and blackout curtains that block out all the light from the surrounding buildings. Although everything in Japan seemed really expensive, international calls from the room were actually pretty reasonable. A couple things that I did not like about the hotel were that there wasn't a top floor bar, just two really expensive restaurants, and the hotel staff were not good at recommending local restaurants. If you want to have a drink and get a fabulous view of Tokyo, go to Sky Bar on the 45th floor of the Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku. A drink there will cost you $10-$15 but it's well worth the spectacular view.

This hotel is in a great location. It is in the heart of some of the best shopping, close to business and right in the middle of the night life area. Because it is right above one of the main train stations you never need a cab (cabs are extremely expensive in Tokyo). It is only about half a mile or less than on kilometer from Yoyogi Park where we jogged daily, beautiful park! The staff was exceptionally helpful and polite. The hotel also had several great restraunts on property to chose from. Non Smoking floor was also a big plus. The beds were very firm but still comfortable and the room was very clean.
